Inspired the large Grenadian population found in Worcester, Grenada’s culture is heavily influenced by French culture, as well as African and Carib-Amerindian roots. Because of the country’s heavy African roots, storytelling has been an important tradition in the country, passing down folktales and legends via this oral tradition. African tradition became the foundation of a distinctive Grenadian style, taking the form of a long colorful dress that often features bright plaid patterns and was mostly worn on special occasions. The style consists of a floor length skirt in a bright color or pattern known as “jupe” (Creole word for skirt), layered over a flattering white cotton chemise or broderie anglaise blouse.
